Pouring Wine

Pouring Wine

What could be more simple than pouring a glass of wine? While it is true that pouring a glass of wine is a simple process there are a few simple things to remember.

When pouring a still wine it is all right to simply pour into the middle of the wine glass. The "typical" or "normal" amount of wine for a glass of wine is about 5 ounces. This would be a fill level anywhere from one third to two thirds of the glass depending on its capacity. This amount of wine is good for several reasons. It is right around the amount that is considered to be a serving for those seeking the purported heart health benefits of wine, and it allows enough room in the glass to swirl the wine.

When pouring a sparkling wine such as champagne, one should pour the wine down the inside of the glass to preserve the bubbles. 5 ounces is again a good serving level.
