Syrah Grapes

Syrah Grape

The Syrah grape is a dark skinned Vitis Vinifera grape used to make full bodied red wine. It is also known as Shiraz in some parts of the world, most notably in Australia.

The Syrah grape's origins are thought to be from Southeastern France according to DNA studies done by the Department of Viticulture and Enology at University of California, Davis. Syrah is a cross between Dureza (a dark skinned grape) and Mondeuse Blanche (a white grape.

Syrah has long been associated with the Rhone Valley in France. In the northern part of the Rhone Syrah is the dominant grape and is used to make wines such as Hermitage. In the southern Rhone it is more typically a blending ingredient along with Grenache and Mourvedre. Syrah is also extensively used to make red wine in:

Wine made from Syrah typically has intense, dark red color, and is full bodied with a smooth rich texture and medium to high tannins. The flavor exhibits dark berries, and ripe fruit with hints of black pepper.

Syrah is typically served at room or cellar temperature (see: Wine Serving Temperature), and goes well with dark meat, duck, and goose.
