Grapes Grown: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Merlot. Texas wineries are also doing great work with grapes such as Sangiovese, Syrah, Riesling, Blanc du Bois and Viognier.

Texas has been a wine producing state since 1883. In that year, the Val Verde Winery in Del Rio was founded. It is the oldest bonded winery in Texas. Texas is also the fifth largest wine producing state in the US (behind California, New York, Washington and Oregon).

Texas has 8 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), which include:

  1. The Bell Mountain Viticultural Area - the first Texas AVA established in 1986
  2. Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country Viticultural Area
  3. The Texas Hill Country Viticultural Area - this is the 2nd largest AVA in the United States
  4. Escondido Valley Viticultural Area
  5. Texas High Plains Viticultural Area
  6. Davis Mountain Viticultural Area
  7. Mesilla Valley Viticultural Area
  8. Texoma Viticultural Area

White wine is produced in Texas from a wide range of grapes, including : Blanc du Bois, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Muscat Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Orange Muscat, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Viognier. Red wine is produced from an equally broad range of grapes, including: Cabernet Sauvignon, Lenoir, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Zinfandel.

In Texas, a varietally labeled wine must contain at least 75% of the grape named.
