South Dakota Wine at a Glance
|
Things that immediately come to mind for South Dakota would include Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, and the Sioux American Indian Tribe. For most, wine would not even enter the conversation. But there is a burgeoning wine industry in South Dakota.
Since farm wineries were legalized 13 years ago, the South Dakota wine industry has grown to 15 wineries that, according to the State Agriculture Department, are expected to produce more than 60,000 gallons of wine in 2010. That is approximately 300,000 bottles. A South Dakota wine was selected as the official wine of the 2010 Iditarod dog sled race (see: SD Wine Selected As Official Wine of Iditarod, KSFY.com, March 6, 2010)
There are currently no American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in South Dakota.
Because of South Dakota's harsh winter climate, most wines produced are either made from hybrid grapes or other fruit. There are only a few vitis vinifera-based wines produced in South Dakota.
