Rhode Island Wine at a Glance
|
Rhode Island brings to mind Newport mansions, Providence water fires, the ocean and Narragansett Bay (it is, after all, The Ocean State). Wine, as with the rest of New England, is certainly not top of mind.
Rhode Island has been a wine producing state since the founding of Sakonnet Vineyards in 1975. Since then the number of wineries in the small state of Rhode Island has grown to 6.
Rhode Island is part of the Southeastern New England American Viticultural Area (AVA), which was established in 1984 and also includes Connecticut and Massachusetts.
All but one of Rhode Island's wineries are located in the southern end of the state where the proximity to the ocean and Narragansett Bay help to mitigate potentially harsh winter conditions.
