Wine has been made in Ohio since the 1820s, when light semi-sweet wine was made from the Catawba grape. In Ohio there are 5 federally designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs):
- Grand River Valley (withing the Lake Erie Appelation) - Established in 1983
- Isle St. George (withing the Lake Erie Appelation) - Established in 1982
- The Lake Erie Appellation (Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania) - Established in 1983
- The Loramie Creek Appellation - Established in 1982, it currently has no operating winery in its jurisdiction
- The Ohio River Valley Appellation (Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia) - Established in 1983, the Ohio River Valley Appellation is the second largest AVE in the United States.
As of 2010, there are over 80 wineries producing wine in Ohio from a very wide variety of grapes.
