New Hampshire Wine at a Glance
|
New Hampshire brings to mind fall foliage, maple syrup, and winter skiing. One would not expect much in the way of wine from a state with such harsh, cold, snowy winters. But contraty to expectation, wine is made in New Hampshire. Granted, many of the wineries rely heavily upon fruit-based wine, some only make hard ciders, and one even only makes a mead from honey. But many of the wineries make wine from grapes, relying heavily on hybrid grapes that can survive the harsh winters.
New Hampshire has no federally designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), so all wine is bottled under the New Hampshire Appelation.
As of 2009, there are 12 wineraries producing hard cider, fruit-based wine, grape-based wine, and mead.
