North Dakota Wine at a Glance
|
The first winery to receive a license in North Dakota, Pointe of View Winery, received its license in 2002. Since those humble and recent beginnings, the wine industry in North Dakota has grown to nearly 20 vineyards and 7 wineries.
As one might expect of such a northern location with often very harsh winters, wine made from other than grapes such as rhubarb, cherry, apple, elderberry, black currant, plum, chokecherry, strawberry, juneberry, and others are dominant. Some grape-based wines are made, however.
There are currently no American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in North Dakota.
