North Carolina's first commercial winery was founded in 1835. At the start of the twentieth century there were 25 wineries in North Carolina. Now, over 100 years later, there are over 80. North Carolina wineries focus on making wine from 2 grape varieties, the traditional European-style vinifera grape and the native muscadine grapes. North Carolina now ranks 12th by number of wineries in the United States.

North Carolina has 3 federally designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs):

As of 2009, there are 12 wineries producing hard cider, fruit-based wine, grape-based wine, and mead.
