Maine Wine at a Glance
|
As one might expect of a state with such a harsh winter climate, fruit wine dominates Maine's wine production. Some wineries, however, are trying to make wine from locally grown French/American Hybrid grapes.
Maine has no federally designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), thus all wine bottled in Maine would carry a Maine appellation.
As of 2009, there are over 15 wineries producing hard cider, fruit-based wine, grape-based wine, and mead.
