Massachusetts Wine at a Glance
|
When one thinks of New England, fall foliage and maple syrup would probably come to mind before wine. When one thinks of Massachusetts, colonial and revolutionary war history (remember that shot heard around the world?), Cape Cod, chowder (pronounced chowdah) would all come to mind before wine. But Massachusetts has been a wine producing state since 1971 when its first bonded winery, Chicama Vineyards, was established. As of 2009, Massachusetts has 27 wineries. Alas, Chicama went out of business in 2008, but others are still flourishing and producing nice wine.
Massachusetts is part of the Southeastern New England American Viticultural Area (AVA), which was established in 1984 and also includes Connecticut and Rhode Island. There is also the Martha's Vineyard AVA which was established in 1985.
A third of Massachusetts' wineries are in southeastern Massachusetts where the warming influence of the ocean can help to mitigate potentially harsh winter conditions.
As might be expected of a regions whose winters feature harsh cold weather, many Massachusetts wineries got their start making fruit wine. While fruit wine is still made at many Mass. wineries, most have now added or moved on to making wine from grapes.
