Commercial wineries have been permitted in Connecticut since 1978. Since then, the wine industry in Connecticut has grown to 28 wineries.
Connecticut is part of the Southeastern New England American Viticultural Area (AVA), which was established in 1984. The Southeastern New England AVA also includes Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Connecticut also has a second AVA, the Western Connecticut Highlands AVA, which was established in 1988.
Connecticut has 4 distinct areas, each with its own unique growing conditions:
- The coastal region which has the warming influence of the ocean to mitigate harsh New England winters
- The central region or central Valley which has the warming influence Connecticut River
- The Western Highlands which is its own appellation and cooler the the preceding regions
- The Eastern Highlands, also a cooler region
