The Changing Nature of Drinking

My wife and I have hosted a holiday party for over 20 years. After this years edition we got to talking about how drinking habits have changed since we started hosting our annual holiday gala.

In the early 1980’s, when we started, most people drank mixed drinks or beer. Very little wine was consumed. Over time that started to change. Wine filtered in more – White Zinfandel in the beginning. By the early to mid-90s mixed drinks were on the decline with white wine on the upswing.

By the turn of the century, mixed drinks were all but gone, wine and beer were the dominant beverages. At that time white wine consumption outweighed red by 2 or 3 to 1.

Fast forward to 2008. Beer is still popular, although micro-brews are now very popular. And for the first year ever, red wine consumption was greater than white wine.

In the course of 20+ years we have moved away from mixed drinks to wine and now on to red wine. My guess is that red wine consumption will continue to increase in the years to come. We may have to start comparing consumption of different red varietals…
