I had a wine the other day (Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay) that I had not tasted in a long time and really enjoyed it. It got me to thinking, why hadn’t I had it in so long? The answer can be summed up in one word – laziness. I, as we all do, had fallen into the safe and comfortable pattern of drinking what I knew well and had forgotten about the other wine. It then occurred to me that one of the biggest pleasures in tasting and drinking wine is discovery. Discovering new and exciting wine and expanding one’s horizons is what tasting wine is all about.
So while it is all right to grab something you know for a certain occasion or meal, don’t forget to occasionally grab something completely new (or go back to something that you have not had in a long time). You will be rewarded with many new and rediscovered wine experiences.
