It is no surprise that the top white wine grape in California is Chardonnay (by a long shot). It is actually the top grape in California. What is surprising is what has caught up to the number 2 grape Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris is now in a dead heat with Sauvignon Blanc for the number 2 spot according to the 2008 California Grape Crush Report put out by the United States Department of Agriculture. Sauvignon Blanc represented 4.47% of the 2008 California grape crush, and Pinot Grigio/Gris was 4.40%.
