Irresponsible Reporting?

I, for one, am getting a little tired of articles in the press providing lists of wine that are expensive and beyond the reach of the average wine consumer. This does nothing to promote wine except among the elite. It seems especially irresponsible in these somewhat dire economic times.

A good case in point, Wines for Valentine’s Day, The San Francisco Chronicle, Feb. 8, 2009. The lest expensive wine on the list is $24. The next least expensive is $38. The rest of the list is over $50 and goes up to $380. Check out the comments – “ridiculous list of overpriced bottles”; “what are the decently-priced wine that the REST OF THE WORLD can afford”…

This would have been at the same time that the paper was reporting nearly 600,000 jobs lost in January and Congress debating an $800 billion stimulus package. What were they thinking? Bugs Bunny said it best – what a bunch of maroons…

More with the times comes in today (2/13/2009) from the New York Daily NewsWine expert chooses the best-priced bottles for Valentine’s Day feasts. Here they have the sense to recommend excellent wine that we all can afford, ranging in price from $9 to $24. That’s much more like it. Something for everyone – economy or a little bit of a splurge that does not break the bank. Kudos to Rosemary Black Daily News Staff Writer for a nice piece.
